The new ethanol: A debate over corn, oil and progress

The Charlotte Observer -- The Obama administration must decide in coming weeks if it’ll temporarily lift requirements to blend ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply. The issue has been largely dormant on the campaign trail, but it’s critical to the success or failure of the next generation of bio-fuel plants under construction today that won’t rely on corn to make fuel.
A public comment period ended in early October, and now the administration must decide by Nov. 13 whether or not to temporarily suspend the Renewable Fuel Standard, created in 2005 and modified in 2007 to help the ethanol industry get off the ground by requiring its use in gasoline.
Ethanol is required to be blended into gasoline to help keep pollution down, and it has the added benefit of lowering dependence on crude oil, about half of it imp

07skydriver: In this weeks debate Rob-me said he is for all types of alternative sources of energy including ETHANOL. Vote for Mhitt if you don't know s**t.

Rmoney has shifted on so many positions over the past year, it's impossible to know what he really stands for except for making money by destroying US companies. A loss for Rmoney is a win for the American people.

first of all, no food should be fuel. good intentions have gone wrong here. secondly, why wouldn't you temporarily lift requirement? people are having a tough time all over & gas is through the roof. get economy going by bringing gas prices down. businesses that drive for a living are stuck in the mud or failing.

If ethanol is made from corn stover and is competitive in a free market, I have no problem with it. Choice and competition are what made this country great. Mandates and subsidies, not so much.

Its a shame that Monsanto, Cargill and ADM support financial greed over morals.

There's other ways to make ethanol than from food.

I have no objection over the current 10% mix if the source is not from a food crop.

Alaydown - well stated!!!

Ethanol needs to be a choice, not a mandate as well as the RFS. The RFS needs to be rescinded.

If you look at Obama's website, he only wants to increase the demand for bio-fuels. He does not want to lift any ethanol requirements. He has consistently maintained that these expensive alternative fuels should be pushed even harder regardless of their high cost.

So Obama might say to the public while in campaign mode that he is for the poor and middle class, but the reality is that he only wants energy that costs us more and an energy policy that will lead us down the same failed path that Europe has gone.

The revolution against American grown ethanol to reduce imported oils is mystifying. There is a clearly well funded (big oil?) campaigne against it and I don't understand why more GB buddies don't get it!

One thing about ethanol in gasoline. The dry gas market has dried up. Nobody needs added alcohol for winter driving.
