In my opinion the government should immediately take steps to stabilize the market instead of letting the supply and demand factors dictate the course of the market that way no one unjustly profits from misfortune

We in Canada have it good regarless of how some think we don't. As long as the tree-huggers in the USA have the Dems ear there is not much we can do about getting oil from them when we need it.

Government also could drop the "price gouging" allegations for fuel and other products in high demand. Allowing increased prices for scarce fuel in a disaster area would permit more people to get some fuel, rather than having the first to the pumps fill up and drain the limited resources.

The free market can't handle disasters. Look at how the "free market" handled the Gulf Oil Spill. Well, there was gas rationing during WWII (and a lot of other kinds of rationing as well). Times are different now with our automobile-dependent society. I'm not sure the the feds can handle rationing now. States have imposed license plate odd-even rationing in the past. Maybe that's the way to go.

Encourage station to at least have ready hook up for backup generators & let that company bring them in when needed. Better would be have the generator on site as some big box stores benefit having a backup that also supplies it's gas station. . Ship oil in as the stations with generators would be able to pump & give local refineries time to get back up & running again. . Since many of the existing fueling facilities may be unable to function, bring in portable, modular fueling stations that can be used for the duration of the disaster. If the disaster is such that production and refining of petroleum is not operating due to the disaster (not because the oil company decides to shut down to restrict output and increase prices), then bring in fuel from other areas of the country. Finally, the States and the Federal Government needs to act quickly to stop price gouging by retailers and by the oil companies. Anyone caught gouging should immediately lose their facility and their funds. If they become homeless, tough luck.

It would work best if it wasn't up to local or state governments to define gouging but rather a national standard for percent increase over what gas cost just before the disaster. Aggressively applied, this might bring an end to the revolting ripoffs.
